The countries of the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region have been going through rapid urbanization for the past three decades,due to an increase in migration from rural to urban areas. 49 percent of the population of the Region are urban dwellers, and it is estimated that by 2030 two thirds of the population of the world live in urban areas.

Urban health challenges across the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region are acute and increasingly complex. Unplanned urban growth puts millions of people living in urban slums and disadvantaged areas in a particularly vulnerable situation, often with poor health coverage and limited access to social services.
