Sharjah's ‘Medicine Distribution’ Initiative - United Arab Emirates

11/08/2020 , by razekt@who.int

Medicines are distributed to vulnerable populations in Sharjah during the pandemic.

COVID-19 caused a disruption in the delivery of medications to individuals who needed them. Therefore, a system was created whereby patients place orders with pharmacists, who then request the medicines for the patients and then nurses distribute the medicines to the patients. Patients are required to sign a form when receiving the medicines to prove that they were collected.

The vulnerable populations targeted by this initiative mainly consist of the elderly, the disabled, the mentally handicapped, etc. The initiative was primarily funded through city funds.

The initiative aimed to meet the needs of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent infections when going to hospitals to collect medication.

The satisfaction of the target group was measured by phone calls. Patients who did like the initiative will call again to take another appointment.

In terms of post-pandemic prospects, the initiative set a precedent whereby the delivery of medication could be arranged via telephone and delivered within the comfort of patients’ homes.

All patient needs were fulfilled by this initiative, and patients repeatedly called to schedule additional sessions, which indicated that they were benefitting from the initiative. Patients reported that their pain has decreased remarkably due to these sessions.
