Unayzah's 'Medicine Delivery For The Elderly' Initiative - Saudi Arabia

A notable community leader in Unayzah spearheads efforts to deliver medications to households in need, and educate the community about COVID-19.

During the pandemic, it was observed that a considerable number of community individuals, particularly vulnerable groups, and low-income workers, needed to be educated about the seriousness of the pandemic and how to limit its spread.

The initiative was carried out by a businesswoman (the owner of a delivery company), as she led efforts to distribute free sterilizers and face masks. She also delivered educational messages about precautionary measures to members of the community, policemen and security workers, in addition to the delivery of medications to households, free of charge.

The initiative tackles themes relevant to older populations, violence against children/women, and migrant/refugee populations. It was primarily funded in kind, and support was given through volunteers offering to use their vehicles and cover fuel expenses. The initiative aimed to improve individual knowledge, attitudes, and practices that should be followed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Due to the absence of cases among the elderly, it is assumed that the initiative – along with the efforts of other sectors- played a role in the mitigation of the impact of COVID-19.

In terms of post-pandemic prospects, the initiative has highlighted the importance of volunteering, and it has indicated the important roles women can play in a mobilized community.

The initiative also helped flatten the COVID-19 pandemic curve in the city and lowered the number of expected cases.
