The countries of the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean Region have been going through rapid urbanization for the past three decades,due to an increase in migration from rural to urban areas. 49 percent of the population of the Region are urban dwellers, and it is estimated that by 2030 two thirds of the population of the world live in urban areas.

The World Health Organization formally declared Sharjah the first healthy city of the Region at a special ceremony held in Sharjah on 30 September 2015. His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, received the WHO Healthy City Certificate from Dr Ala Alwan, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.
