Jalajil's 'Health Package' Initiative - Saudi Arabia

11/05/2020 , by razekt@who.int

Providing Jalajil's community with the tools needed to protect themselves from COVID-19 and limit its spread.

Lack of awareness of the causes of the virus and the ways in which the virus is transmitted was a prevalent issue that needed to be addressed. Considering the newness of the virus, it was deemed important to provide families with little financial income with the tools necessary to fight the virus.

Therefore, pioneer volunteers from Almajmaah and other areas in the region launched this initiative and reached out to businessman Sheikh / Ahmed Al-Salama, which in turn ensured that the cost of this initiative was addressed. The initiative was also launched in coordination with several governmental bodies to achieve this implementation.

Themes tackled by the initiative revolve around older populations, migrant/refugee populations, physical activity, mental health, schooling, the workplace, and food security. All vulnerable populations in the community received health packs for free. Furthermore, the initiative was funded by donors. The initiative aimed to reduce the incidence of the disease and spread awareness to tackle COVID-19 and provide the tools through which minimal losses would be observed.

The awareness that emerged from this initiative contributed to the prevention of the spread of the disease inside the city, as per the detailed flyers on how to deal with the virus and the tools provided inside the health pack (such as sterilizers, masks and gloves) that contribute to raising awareness. Recipients of the health packs realized the importance of using the provided items, and this also contributed to the low rate of infection inside the city.

In terms of post-pandemic prospects, the initiative has raised awareness and provided valuable experience in terms of coping with a pandemic, while taking the right safety precautions and ensuring that all information related must be taken from a verified resource (the Ministry of Health.)

It has highlighted the importance of community participation and promoted trust in entities such as the Ministry of Health.

Results can be summarized as follows:

  • The required number of health bags was distributed in record time.
  • Awareness has been raised, as per the accounts of participating health authorities (whose followers exceed 100,000 residents in the region.)
  • The initiative has enabled the community to combat the virus more effectively.
